This project flips conventional approaches to highway engineering, making the avalanche protection measures along Norwegian highways a visibly emphasized part of the landscape rather than hidden elements. The massive engineering efforts which make modern highways safe are usually hidden, yet they help maintain the dangerous disconnection between human action and the environment at large.
Segmented concrete ribs stick out of the terrain to indicate the breadth of engineering, from excavation and leveling of mountainsides to fill extending into the fjord.
This conceptual model reveals how the future road project would cut into the existing fjord and mountain landscape.
